When you would claim
- Road accident damaging the vehicle
- Fire, flood or natural damage to the vehicle
- Theft of the vehicle or of parts from it
- Damage while the vehicle was parked or under repair
What insurers most often rely on
- Driving licence not valid for that class of vehicle, which is the commonest single ground on this cover
- Fitness certificate or permit expired at the time of the accident
- Vehicle used for a purpose outside the limitations of use
- Repairs carried out before survey
- Overloading, or carriage of passengers on a goods vehicle
Most are answered by a document that existed on the day of the accident and is far harder to obtain a month afterwards.
The documents
before the workshop, not after12 items, and the order matters more than the length. Almost all of it has to exist before the vehicle goes in for repair.
- Claim form and the FIR where there is injury, death or TP damage
- Registration certificate, fitness certificate and permit
- Driver's licence, and its endorsement for that class of vehicle
- Photographs of the vehicle at the scene before it was moved
- Load documents where goods were being carried
- Repair estimate from the workshop, itemised
- The replaced parts, kept until the surveyor releases them
- Cancelled cheque and bank details in the insured's name, for the NEFT payment
- Details of any other insurance covering the same risk
- A claim bill: the amount claimed, itemised, with the working behind it
- Load challan or goods receipt where the vehicle was loaded
- Final repair invoice and payment receipt, in addition to the estimate

Commercial Vehicle Claim: What to Do
Commercial motor claims are refused on paperwork far more often than on the facts of the collision: the licence, the permit, the fitness, the load.
Most often lost by: Authorising repairs before the survey, and discovering afterwards that the driver's licence was not valid for that class of vehicle.

There is no average clause here. What caps the claim is the IDV on your schedule, and on a total loss or a theft that figure is the entire settlement. An IDV pushed down to hold the premium down is a discount you pay back once, at the worst moment.
