The first 72 hours

What to do tonight, in the order it has to be done.

The first seventy-two hours decide more of a claim than the next seventy-two days. Eight loss types, each written to be followed by whoever is actually standing there, at night, on a phone.

The one ruleNothing is moved, cleaned, repaired, dismantled, scrapped or signed for until the surveyor has seen it. Every procedure below is a variation on that sentence, and almost every avoidable reduction in a claim is a breach of it.

Three deadlines
  • Tell the insurer now, not after the assessment.
  • Notice to anybody else responsible the carrier, the contractor, the police, within the time your policy sets.
  • Every document within the time the insurer asks for it.
