First thing, todayTell the insurer the same day and stop clearing the site. The debris is the evidence of what was there.
- Tell the insurer now, not after the assessment.
- The fire brigade and the police told today. Their records are asked for months later and can only be made now.
- Every document within the time the insurer asks for it.
When you would claim
- Fire, lightning strike or explosion at the premises
- Impact damage from a vehicle or falling object
- Riot, strike or malicious damage where the cover extends to it
- Storm, flood or inundation damage under the allied perils
What insurers most often rely on
- Underinsurance, so the average clause reduces the claim in proportion. Much the commonest reduction on this cover.
- Late intimation, where the delay is said to have prejudiced the insurer's ability to assess the loss
- Property or a process not declared, or stored in a way the policy does not contemplate
- A breach of a warranty about the premises, such as electrical fitness or hazardous storage
- Cause said to fall outside the listed perils
Every one of those is answerable, and several are decided by what was done in the first two days rather than by anything argued later.
The documents

- Photographs and video taken before anything was moved

- Fixed asset register and depreciation schedule
- GST returns and production records covering the period
- Estimate or quotation for repair or replacement
- Salvage details, and written agreement on what happens to it

Check the sum insured
This cover carries an average clause. Declare less than the value at risk and every claim pays that proportion short, a partial loss exactly as much as a total one. Three numbers will tell you where you stand.
