Boiler and Pressure Plant

Explosion or collapse of a boiler or pressure vessel, and the damage it causes to surrounding property.

Also calledBoiler and Pressure Plant Insurance · BPV

First thing, todaySecure the area, notify the factory inspectorate as required, and leave the vessel exactly as it is.

Three deadlines
  • Tell the insurer now, not after the assessment.
  • The fire brigade and the police told today. Their records are asked for months later and can only be made now.
  • Every document within the time the insurer asks for it.

When you would claim

  • Explosion or collapse of a boiler, receiver or pressure vessel
  • Damage to surrounding plant and buildings from the same event
  • Injury to employees or third parties arising from it

What insurers most often rely on

  • An inspection or test certificate that had lapsed
  • Operation beyond the rated pressure or outside statutory conditions
  • Wear, corrosion or scale, which are generally excluded
  • Damage to the vessel claimed where only consequential damage is covered

Every one of those is answerable, and several are decided by what was done in the first two days rather than by anything argued later.

The documents

most of it exists already

10 items, and most of them exist somewhere in your own office already. Assemble them once and properly; a file sent in pieces takes three times as long to settle.

  • Claim form and the vessel's registration and inspection certificates
  • The statutory inspector's report
  • Photographs of the vessel and the surrounding damage
  • Operating and maintenance log, and the last hydraulic test record
  • Water treatment records where relevant
  • Repair or replacement estimate
  • Details of any injury and of any third-party damage
  • Cancelled cheque and bank details in the insured's name, for the NEFT payment
  • Details of any other insurance covering the same risk
  • A claim bill: the amount claimed, itemised, with the working behind it
The timelineWhatever else you send, send a one-page timeline: loss, intimation, survey, documents sent, offer. More claims turn on the sequence of dates than on any single document.

Read the fire playbook alongside this one. The first night is the same wherever it burned: nothing cleared, nothing scrapped, everything photographed before anybody tidies up for the surveyor.

Check the sum insured

This cover carries an average clause. Declare less than the value at risk and every claim pays that proportion short, a partial loss exactly as much as a total one. Three numbers will tell you where you stand.
