First thing, todayPhotograph the works before anything is cleared, and check whether the maintenance period has begun.
- Tell the insurer now, not after the assessment.
- The fire brigade and the police told today. Their records are asked for months later and can only be made now.
- Every document within the time the insurer asks for it.
When you would claim
- Collapse, fire, flood or storm damage to the works
- Theft of materials from site
- Damage during testing and commissioning
- Third-party injury or property damage around the site
What insurers most often rely on
- Faulty design, workmanship or materials, which are commonly excluded or covered only in part
- Loss during the maintenance period, which runs on different terms
- Work outside the contract period or the extended period not endorsed
- Sum insured based on the contract value rather than the completed value including escalation
Every one of those is answerable, and several are decided by what was done in the first two days rather than by anything argued later.
The documents
most of it exists already11 items, and most of them exist somewhere in your own office already. Assemble them once and properly; a file sent in pieces takes three times as long to settle.

- Site photographs before and after the loss
- Site diary, daily progress report and weather records
- Details of the stage of completion and value of work done
- Purchase invoices for damaged materials
- Consultant's or engineer's report on the cause
- Reinstatement estimate
- Any notice from the principal or the third party
- Cancelled cheque and bank details in the insured's name, for the NEFT payment
- Details of any other insurance covering the same risk
- A claim bill: the amount claimed, itemised, with the working behind it

Read the fire playbook alongside this one. The first night is the same wherever it burned: nothing cleared, nothing scrapped, everything photographed before anybody tidies up for the surveyor.
Check the sum insured
This cover carries an average clause. Declare less than the value at risk and every claim pays that proportion short, a partial loss exactly as much as a total one. Three numbers will tell you where you stand.
