There is an order to this, and going out of order wastes the clock.
Each route has its own limits and its own time bars, and most expect you to have finished with the previous one.
Reference/Escalation
- The insurer's own grievance cellEvery insurer has one, with a published address and a response time. It is a genuine step, not a formality: a reasoned complaint here resolves more claims than people expect, and the later routes will ask whether you used it. The address is on your policy document and on the insurer's own site, under Grievance Redressal.First
- The regulator's complaint channelIRDAI runs Bima Bharosa, a public grievance portal for policyholders whose insurer has not resolved a complaint. It records the complaint against the insurer, which matters to them, and the portal undertakes to attend to it within fourteen days. The regulator itself is at irdai.gov.in.If unresolved
- The Insurance OmbudsmanA free, independent forum established under the Insurance Ombudsman Rules, 2017, with offices across India, run by the Council for Insurance Ombudsmen. The Council states a cap on the compensation that can be sought: read it from the source before you rely on it, because the figure and the time bars both move.Within the time bar
- Consumer forum or civil courtSlower and more expensive, and the right answer for some claims. The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission sits at the top of a three-tier structure; most claims start at the district commission. Worth taking a considered view on before starting, and not out of frustration with the previous step.Last
Check your limitsMonetary caps and time bars change, and they differ by route. Every link above goes to the body itself, which is where the current figure lives; all four were read on 13 September 2026. Confirm the position for your own claim before relying on any of it, or ask us and we will confirm it for your file.

Three deadlines
- Tell the insurer now, not after the assessment.
- Notice to anybody else responsible the carrier, the contractor, the police, within the time your policy sets.
- Every document within the time the insurer asks for it.
