Travel Insurance
Medical treatment abroad, a trip cut short, a bag that did not arrive, and the documents replaced when they are lost.

First thing, todayCall the assistance number on the policy before treatment starts, because most overseas medical claims are run through them.
- Tell the insurer now, not after the assessment.
- Report it where it happened to the airline, the hotel or the police, and keep whatever they give you.
- Every document within the time the insurer asks for it.
When you would claim
- Illness or accident while travelling
- Baggage delayed, damaged or lost by the airline
- Passport or travel documents lost abroad
- A trip cancelled or cut short for a reason the policy names
- Flight delay beyond the hours the policy sets
What insurers most often rely on
- Treatment taken without calling the assistance number first
- A condition that existed before the trip, which most travel wordings exclude
- Baggage claimed without the airline's own report
- Delay shorter than the number of hours the policy sets
- A trip cancelled for a reason that is not on the policy's list
A ground is not a verdict. Most of these turn on what was reported, to whom, and how quickly.
The documents
the policy's papers, and the event's10 items, in two halves: the papers your policy generates and the papers the event generates. A claim needs both and people keep only the first.
- Claim form and the policy certificate with the assistance reference
- Passport with the entry and exit stamps, and the visa
- Boarding passes and the ticket
- The airline's property irregularity report, on a baggage claim
- Hospital records and the itemised bill, on a medical claim
- Receipts for anything bought because the bag did not arrive
- Written confirmation of the delay or cancellation from the airline
- Cancelled cheque and bank details in the insured's name, for the NEFT payment
- Details of any other insurance covering the same trip
- The amount claimed under each section of the policy, with the conversion rate on the date it was spent

What the first day looks like
There is no playbook for a trip. The first call is the assistance number printed on the policy, before treatment starts and before you buy a replacement for anything, because on most travel wordings that call is the condition.
Read the sections
A travel policy is not one cover with one limit but eight or ten, each with its own cap and its own deductible. A claim is settled section by section, so the figure that matters is the one against the section you are claiming under.
