First thing, todayTell the police and the insurer the same day, and do not let the stock register be written up from memory afterwards.
- Tell the insurer now, not after the assessment.
- The FIR the same day. An insurer will not move far without it.
- Every document within the time the insurer asks for it.
When you would claim
- Burglary or robbery at the shop or the workshop
- Loss while stock was being carried by a partner or an employee
- Loss from a window display or a counter during business hours
- Loss in transit with an angadia or a courier, where covered
- Infidelity of an employee entrusted with stock
What insurers most often rely on
- Stock not in the safe overnight where the wording requires it
- Loss while carried by somebody not named or not authorised
- Stock register not written up to the date of loss, so the quantity cannot be proved
- Valuation claimed at retail where the wording pays cost
- Protections warranted in the policy that were not in use
Every one of those is answerable, and several are decided by what was done in the first two days rather than by anything argued later.
The documents
most of it exists already11 items, and most of them exist somewhere in your own office already. Assemble them once and properly; a file sent in pieces takes three times as long to settle.

- FIR and the final police report
- Stock register and the last physical stock verification
- Purchase invoices and the valuation basis for the lost items
- Photographs of the premises, the safe and the point of entry
- CCTV footage covering the period, before it is overwritten
- Details of the person carrying the stock and their authority to do so
- Books of account showing the stock position on the date of loss
- Details of any other insurance covering the same stock
- Cancelled cheque and bank details in the insured's name, for the NEFT payment
- A claim bill: the amount claimed, itemised, with the working behind it

Burglary Claim: The First 24 Hours, and what it shares with this
The burglary playbook covers the first night of this: the FIR the same day, and no tidying up before the surveyor has stood in the room.
Check the sum insured
This cover carries an average clause. Declare less than the value at risk and every claim pays that proportion short, a partial loss exactly as much as a total one. Three numbers will tell you where you stand.
